New Experimental Mule Deer Regulation

The general mule deer season starts Nov. 17 in the Panhandle and Southwestern Panhandle and Nov. 23 in the Trans-Pecos. 74 counties have mule deer seasons, and the bag limits vary by county.

If you plan to hunt mule deer in Briscoe, Childress, Cottle, Floyd, Hall or Motley counties, there is a new experimental antler regulation. The outside spread of the main beams of a harvested mule deer must be at least 20 inches. The graphic below details how to field judge bucks.

The goal is to protect young bucks, and this decision was based on years of harvest data. Refer to our press release and FAQs for more information.

Legal vs. Not Legal

Take Your Buck to a Harvest Check Station

Hunters are encouraged to bring their mule deer buck to a harvest check station so TPWD wildlife biologists can collect age and antler measurements to assess the effects of the regulation on buck age structure. This data is essential to evaluating the success of the experimental antler restriction.

Hunters who bring their mule deer bucks harvested from Briscoe, Childress, Cottle, Floyd, Hall & Motley counties to a check station will be entered in drawings for items such as rifles, lifetime hunting licenses, and gift cards donated by Dallas Safari Club, the Texas Panhandle Chapter of the Dallas Safari Club, the Mule Deer Foundation, and Houston Safari Club.
