Be a Lake Gatekeeper

Find out where boats are coming from or going to before they are launched.

Boat Inspection

Proactive marinas can act as gatekeepers by learning where a new tenant is coming from or where a tenant leaving an infested lake is taking their boat. If a boat has been stored on a lake with invasive mussels, it must be professionally decontaminated and fully dried before being moved to another lake. This applies to all lakes with invasive zebra mussels – in Texas and other states – or quagga mussels (their close relative found in many lakes in nearby states).

Print out a map of invasive mussel locations and keep it handy in your leasing office, service center, or marina store. Give tenants on lakes with zebra mussels this flyer when they sign a new lease or give notice of lease termination.

Ask your tenants to call us at our 24/7 hotline at 512-389-4848 or email us at aquaticinvasives@tpwd.texas.gov before a boat stored in the water on a lake with zebra mussels is moved to another lakeBy working with us, marinas can stop invasive mussels in their tracks before they launch in our lakes.

Spread the word, not zebra mussels!

Would Your Marina Join a Zebra Mussel Prevention Program?

We are actively working to provide marinas with more resources to help prevent the spread of invasive mussels. As part of this effort, one of the next steps is creating a partnership program for marinas (similar to Clean Marinas) – and we want your input!

The goal of the program is to create a coalition of marinas committed to preventing the spread of zebra mussels by voluntarily implementing best management practices with support from TPWD.

Please take our short survey to provide your input on this developing program.
