The Buffalo Soldiers hit the trail hard over the summer doing programs close to home. Frontier Baseball proved to be the most popular program this summer. Lt. Dolifka presented our Frontier Baseball program to over two thousand boy scouts and adult leaders. But it was not all fun and games for the soldiers either. The Quartermaster has issued lots of new equipment to the Buffalo Soldiers so that they can reach more people and more parks across Texas. July was Buffalo Soldier Heritage Month. Our focus for July was on training and cultivating a new group of volunteers in the Austin area to help spread the message of the Buffalo Soldiers. Above is their picture. Many of them went on to help us with an event at McKinney Falls State Park. The Photo of the Month showcases that very successful program.

Check out the new section called Private Kepi's Corner. This new section will follow our newest recruit's journey in becoming a good soldier. There is lots to learn and he needs your help. Along the way he will share stories and the lessons he learns from being in the Buffalo Soldiers. Keep your eyes and ears on the TPWD Buffalo Soldiers Facebook page so you can get updates on the Private Kepi's adventures!

September is the start of a brand new year for the Buffalo Soldiers. We will start off the year focusing on the region 4; which encompasses the parks around Houston. We are looking at Houston for a potential "Iron Riders" program. Please check out our calendar and come out to an event. We look forward to seeing you out on the trail

Fun Fact

Did you know...

In 1948 President Harry S. Truman sign an executive order to end segregation in the U.S. armed forces.

1950- The 24th Infantry Regiment saw combat during the Korean War and was the one of the last segregated regiment to engage in combat.

On October 1, 1951 the 24th Infantry Regiment was relieved from front line duty in Korea so it could be dissolved. That day marked the end of the 82 year history of the regiment. Although issues of its performance certainly drove the dissolution of the unit, the U.S. Army cited Executive Order 9981 issued by President Harry Truman in 1948, integrating the U.S. military as the official reason for the end of the 24th Infantry. On December 12, 1951, the last segregated regiments, the 27th Cavalry and the 28th (Horse) Cavalry, were disbanded.

Keep Connected

Texas Buffalo Soldiers bring history to life with stories, costumes and tools.

At one of our programs, you can learn how to track an animal, fish with a cane pole or cook over a campfire. We play traditional games, use the sun to find directions, learn Native American skills, and even saddle a horse.

We make connections between history and the outdoors. Our goal is to not only share history, but to share our Story.

Follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram and help share our story!
