February came and went with a fury! The Buffalo Soldiers hit the trail hard, delivering programs from Pflugerville to San Angelo all in support of Black History Month. We wrapped up February by attending the National Association of Interpreters Regional Conference in Grapevine, Texas. At the NAI conference we met with other interpreters from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and LouisianaOur Program Coordinator, Luis Padilla, lead a presentation “Voices of the Past”, where we all had the chance to share how we interpret living history and the story of the Buffalo Soldiers.

In all of our programs, we also try to share and offer a bigger picture of the Buffalo Soldiers-- how they fit into the story of the American West, and the different peoples that were part of their story. The picture of the cannon crew at Fort McKavett is a good example of how people of different backgrounds and ethnicity came together to do a job. The crew pictured is an accurate reflection of the past. The crew consists of five men of different ethnic backgrounds. One is an African American, two are Mexican American, one is half Native American and half Caucasian American, and an Irish American. They are all soldiers. The US Army had immigrants from all over enlist to build a new life for themselves. These soldiers came from India, the Philippines, the Middle East, Europe, and even from China.

People from across the globe and all walks of life came to America for a better life. Many of those peoples moved out west looking for those new opportunities to realize their American Dream. We all played a part in the building of this country. Many have shed their blood, sweat and tears for this country. We are all part of a bigger story here. To truly get an understanding of our story and our history-- we we must we must look at the good, the bad, and everything in between. We need to celebrate our diversity and remember that we are all Americans!

Keep Connected

Texas Buffalo Soldiers bring history to life with stories, costumes and tools.

At one of our programs, you can learn how to track an animal, fish with a cane pole or cook over a campfire. We play traditional games, use the sun to find directions, learn Native American skills, and even saddle a horse.

We make connections between history and the outdoors. Our goal is to not only share history, but to share our Story.

Follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram and help share our story!
