Colorguard for University of Texas Men's Basketball vs Kansas University December 2017

A new year is about new beginnings and new resolutions to help better ourselves. 2018 has dawned and the Buffalo Soldiers have those same thoughts on our minds. This year has been about getting back to the basics. We are trying to build up our volunteer base, reach out to new parks we haven't been too, and to find new audiences to share the story of the Buffalo Soldiers with.

Just before the New Year started we had the opportunity to do something fun and slightly different. We present the colors at the University of Texas Men's Basketball game against Kansas. Four of the soldiers in the above photo are volunteers. Two of those four are brand new to the program.

We have been travelling all around visiting new parks. Three of them stand out because their staff made us feel right at home. Thank you South Llano River SP and Lockhart SP, and Longhorn Caverns SP! You should check them out if you get a chance! Thank you to all who have hosted us this year! We also want to thank our newest recruit and fellow coworker Ted Pick, the interpreter from Huntsville SP. He jumped right in, suited up, and helped with several events. Ted, you and Erin will always be welcome in our camp!

With the help of the staff at Lockhart SP we also decided to step outside the box a bit and found a new audience. This new audience for us was the Home School Groups that call Lockhart SP home. It was a great success and we look forward to working with others like this in the future.

Spring is right around the corner and it is shaping up to be a very busy season! Keep an eye on our calendar and if we are nearby come on out! I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone! Don't be shy, come on out and share some stories with us. Put on some wool and lend a hand if you can!

Ready Forward! We Can.. We Will!

Fun Fact

Did you know...  As a result of unrest in the Philippines after the Spanish American War in February of 1899 the Filipino Nationalists (Insurectos) started an uprising. This was known as the Philippine American War. This was America's first war as a World Power. The Filipino Insurectos were led by Emilio Aguinaldo, who resisted the idea of American domination and began attacking U.S. troops. The 24th and 25th Infantry regiments were among those attacked by the Insurectos. The 9th and 10th Cavalry were sent to the Philippines as reinforcements, thus bringing all four Black regiments plus African American national guardsmen into the war against the Insurectos. The Philippine American War lasted until 1902 and the Philippines became a US Protectorate.

It was after serving in the Philippine American War that the 24th Infantry and the 9th Cavalry returned to the States and served as the First African American Park Rangers at Yosemite National Park.

Keep Connected

Texas Buffalo Soldiers bring history to life with stories, costumes and tools.

At one of our programs, you can learn how to track an animal, fish with a cane pole or cook over a campfire. We play traditional games, use the sun to find directions, learn Native American skills, and even saddle a horse.

We make connections between history and the outdoors. Our goal is to not only share history, but to share our Story.

Follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram and help share our story!
