Buffalo Soldiers on Congress

The TPWD Buffalo Soldiers hope everyone had a safe and happy Holiday Season. This is a time of reflection, celebration, and hope for better things to come. We celebrated the chance to get outside and had a great time visiting Enchanted Rock SNA and South Llano River SP. We made many new friends and hopefully sparked an interest to learn more about their history in a few young folks.

We also visited Fort Sam Houston and took time to reflect upon a more somber note in the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. This past December 11th, 2017, marked the 100th anniversary of the execution of thirteen members of the 24th Infantry Regiment at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. These “Buffalo Soldiers” had been tried in the largest court martial in U.S. history which took place in response to the Camp Logan Riot on August 23, 1917. Hopefully we can learn from this and never let it happen again.

The reason we do what we do is to honor what they did. To make sure that those who came before us are not forgotten. It is our job, our passion, to give voice to those who did not have a voice before. You must know where you have been in order to find where you are going in the future. We hope that in 2018 more of you will step and join our ranks. We need your help now more than ever to make sure their stories are not snuffed out!  Join us in 2018!

Happy New Year Troopers!

Fun Fact

Did you know... 1917- The Houston riot of 1917, or Camp Logan riot, was a mutiny by 156 African American soldiers of the Third Battalion of the all-black Twenty-fourth United States Infantry Regiment. It occupied most of one night, and resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and sixteen civilians. The rioting soldiers were tried at three courts-martial. A total of nineteen would be executed, and forty-one were given life sentences.

None of these court-martialed men received proper legal counsel or representation and did not have access to an appeal. All had been subjected to heavy abuse and Jim Crow laws while stationed in Houston.

Keep Connected

Texas Buffalo Soldiers bring history to life with stories, costumes and tools.

At one of our programs, you can learn how to track an animal, fish with a cane pole or cook over a campfire. We play traditional games, use the sun to find directions, learn Native American skills, and even saddle a horse.

We make connections between history and the outdoors. Our goal is to not only share history, but to share our Story.

Follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram and help share our story!
