Fort Stockton 150th

2017 has been a year full of Anniversaries. Fort Richardson celebrated their 150th Anniversary in April. This past October Fort Stockton and Fort Griffin celebrated their 150th Anniversaries. Fort Davis celebrated their 150th this year as well. Fort Concho will celebrate their 150th in December and this Christmas will mark the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Lancaster.

Fort Stockton is particularly important to the Buffalo Soldiers because it was the first Regimental Headquarters for the 9th Cavalry after they left San Antonio. You will notice on their coins pictured above the Guard House at Fort Stockton. It was the very first structure completed by the 9th Cavalry at Fort Stockton. The reason why it was the first is because of a mutiny resulting in the death of an officer while the 9th moved from San Antonio to Fort Stockton. This was a rather rough start for the 9th but at the Battle of Fort Lancaster they would redeem themselves and prove they were good soldiers.

This Veteran's Day the Buffalo Soldiers want to salute our Military, our Frontier Forts and our fellow living historians that help tell the stories of the the Soldiers and these Forts they served at. It is all our goal to help keep History Alive and remember we all had a part to play in the building of this country!

Fun Fact

Did you know...

On April 9th, the Ninth was involved in a mutiny. Lieutenant Edward Heyl of E Company had become angry at the speed with which his orders were obeyed. In response, he ordered several troopers punished by hanging them by their wrists from a tree branch. While Heyl sat in a nearby saloon drinking, one of the men managed to free himself. Heyl discovered this when he returned from the saloon and, infuriated, he started to beat the man with the flat of his saber. Sgt. Harrison Bradford and 1st. Lt. Seth Griffin and took issue with the violent behavior of Lt. Edward Heyl towards his troops. Lt. Heyl attacked and killed Sgt. Bradford and mortally wounded Lt. Griffin. Other officers and troops were injured in the ensuing fight. Lt. Heyl was never punished for his actions.

Keep Connected

Texas Buffalo Soldiers bring history to life with stories, costumes and tools.

At one of our programs, you can learn how to track an animal, fish with a cane pole or cook over a campfire. We play traditional games, use the sun to find directions, learn Native American skills, and even saddle a horse.

We make connections between history and the outdoors. Our goal is to not only share history, but to share our Story.

Follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram and help share our story!
