From the Sergeant's Desk
FY 2017 was a very busy and productive year
for the Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Outreach Program. We served schools from all
over Texas-- from El Paso in the West, all the way to San Augustine in the
East. We also programmed at State Parks far and wide, from Lake Ray Roberts SP
in the North to Lake Corpus Christi SP in the South. Overall, we delivered over
100 programs while teaching over 30,000 people of all ages the story of
the Buffalo Soldiers. We played many games of Trap ball, completed our first
Iron Rider bike event, and shared stories about the simple daily life of a
solider and acts of bravery while under fire.
The Buffalo Soldier Program held two
volunteer training classes this last year and we look forward to developing
those new partnerships and expanding our reach. We are especially excited about
renewing our ties with the Bexar County Buffalo Soldier Group and building a
new relationship with Fort Davis National Historic Site.
FY 2018 will hopefully be an exciting year as
well! We will be posting and hiring part time positions in 2018 with our
program, and growing our staff to continue to reach audiences across
Texas. If you or someone you know might be interested in applying for a
position with the Buffalo Soldiers, check out our postings in early January at https://tpwd.texas.gov/jobs/
October is packed full of events all over
Texas including the 150th Anniversary of the 9th Cavalry re-opening and
establishing their headquarters at Fort Stockton. Details on upcoming events
can be found in the links below. Starting in November, we will be on the trail
to State Parks in Region 3--Austin / San Antonio Metro and the Hill Country. In
February we will march out to State Parks in Region 1 - West Texas and in May
we will take on the Mighty Region 5 and Region 6, which is Northwest Texas, the
Panhandle, and East Texas.
Ready Forward! We Can! We Will!
