Buffalo
Soldier Month kicked off this July and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Buffalo
Soldier Heritage and Outreach Program had the distinct honor and privilege to serve as the Honor Guard for a very special Wreath Laying Ceremony at Fort McKavett, Texas to honor all those soldiers who had fallen in service of their country while serving at Fort McKavett. We were joined by several of our volunteers and other fellow living historians from across the State of Texas in honoring these soldiers.
This very moving ceremony planned and executed by our 16 year old volunteer, Corporal Daniel Garza. He was inspired by a visit to the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery and it took over a year to plan out. Daniel is very impressive young man to say the least. He is a high school student and cross country runner in San Antonio, Texas. He volunteers with Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Program and Fort McKavett, SHS. Daniel was recently awarded the Bronze and Silver Congressional Medal. He is now currently working towards his Gold Medal. We salute you Corporal Daniel Garza!
It is the mission and purpose of the Texas Parks and Wildlife's Buffalo Soldier Heritage and Outreach Program to tell the story of these soldiers who fought and died. It is stories like theirs that this country was built upon. We cannot do it alone. We need more young volunteers like Corporal Garza to stand up and step out as leaders of the future.
Volunteer today! Help us Pass on the Legacy!
