June and July are very important months for African American History in Texas. Juneteenth or June 19th is Emancipation Day which celebrates when all the slaves in Texas were freed in Texas. July is Texas Buffalo Soldier Month. It was in July of 1866 that Congress passed the Military Reorganization Act that created the six all new black regiments to help protect the settlers that moved west after the Civil War. This is when many of these newly freed slaves began to exercise their new rights and actually join the army and willingly serve their country.

It is their story, their Legacy that the Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Buffalo Soldier Heritage and Outreach program works very hard to make come alive to peoples all across the great state of Texas. Connecting the old and young alike to the stories of these great men and even women to the outdoors. What we do would not be possible without the help and support of our volunteers all across Texas. We are always looking to recruit new volunteers to help us reach more people and new audiences. On August 19th we will hold our volunteer training for the San Antonio Region. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with the TPWD Buffalo Soldier Program this training class would a great head start. I challenge you to step up and take this new opportunity just like those men (and women) did back in the day.

Keep Connected

Texas Buffalo Soldiers bring history to life with stories, costumes and tools.

At one of our programs, you can learn how to track an animal, fish with a cane pole or cook over a campfire. We play traditional games, use the sun to find directions, learn Native American skills, and even saddle a horse.

We make connections between history and the outdoors. Our goal is to not only share history, but to share our Story.

Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and help share our story!
