From the Sergeant's Desk

Cedar Hill

March was a good month for the Buffalo Soldiers. The program spent several days in programming at San Augustine Middle School, Meadow's Place Elementary, and Brazos Bend Program. At Brazos Bend SP we had the opportunity to see our two sister programs in action. Texas State Park Ambassadors held a training camp out and asked us to speak with their new class of volunteers. Texas Outdoor Family was also out there in full force with a large group of families learning how to camp and enjoy the outdoors. All three programs are always looking for new volunteers. I encourage you all to step up and volunteer with one of these excellent programs and help us get people outside!

The Buffalo Soldiers utilized the later half of March to rest, recuperate, and gear up for a very busy Spring. The whole regiment will be spread out all over the state this April and May sharing the story of the Buffalo Soldiers. Check our schedule and see if we will be at an event near you!

Fun Fact

Did you know...

In 1910 Buffalo Soldiers from the 25th Infantry were called upon to aid the fledgling US Forestry Service and were sent to assist fighting forest fires in Idaho and Montana. Making them some of the first African American Wildland Firefighters. Their heroic efforts are credited with saving the town of Avery, Idaho. Over 3 million acres burned in this event which has become known as "The Big Burn."

Keep Connected

Texas Buffalo Soldiers bring history to life with stories, costumes and tools.

At one of our programs, you can learn how to track an animal, fish with a cane pole or cook over a campfire. We play traditional games, use the sun to find directions, learn Native American skills, and even saddle a horse.

We make connections between history and the outdoors. Our goal is to not only share history, but to share our Story.

Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and help share our story!
