The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) and the Houston Independent School District (HISD) recently announced a partnership providing eligible high school students with METRO transportation for the 2025–2026 academic year. The goal is to increase student access to education, jobs, after-school programs, and essential services by removing transportation barriers.
As a follow-up to that announcement, HISD families are reminded that only high school students who qualify for district-provided transportation are eligible to receive a METRO Q® Card at no cost to them.
How to Apply:
To receive a METRO Q® Card:
- Families must complete the transportation request form available on the HISD website.
- Once a student is approved for transportation, families will receive information about how to receive a preloaded METRO card directly through their school.
This Q® Card allows eligible students to ride local bus, METRORail, and curb2curb services at no cost to the student or families. The program is designed to empower students with greater mobility and independence, while helping families reduce transportation expenses.
“We want to make sure eligible students and their families know how to take advantage of this important opportunity,” said METRO Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock. “This program is already making a difference, and we look forward to seeing more students benefit from it as the new school year approaches.”
If a student is not eligible for a free card through the district, families can still obtain a METRO Q® Student Fare Card, which provides rides at a discounted rate of only $0.60 per trip. This discounted fare is available to all students, regardless of school level or district.
For more information or to fill out the transportation request form, families should visit the HISD transportation page or contact their student’s school.
