METRO and HISD Partner to Provide Transit for High School Students
Empowering Students with Greater Access to Education, Opportunity, and Independence
The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) and the Houston Independent School District (HISD) have partnered to provide METRO transportation to all HISD high school students for the 2025–2026 academic year. This collaboration is aimed at increasing access to education, after-school activities, jobs, and essential services.
Under the partnership, HISD high school students who sign up to use METRO will receive a preloaded METRO Q® Fare Card through their school administrators. The cards allow students to ride local bus, METRORail, and curb2curb at no cost to them, helping families save on transportation while empowering students with more mobility.
“Reliable transportation is a gateway to opportunity,” said METRO Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock. “This partnership opens doors for education, employment, and engagement, and we’re proud to support the success of Houston’s students.”
The METRO Q® Card works seamlessly with the RideMETRO app, which allows students to plan their route, track their bus or train in real time, view current service alerts, and more. All METRO vehicles are ADA-accessible and are equipped with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and security cameras to ensure a safe and comfortable ride.
Students simply tap their card when boarding, making it easy to get to school, after-school jobs, extracurricular activities, or other destinations around the city.
“This is more than a transportation solution, it’s an investment in our students’ futures,” said HISD Chief of Organizational Effectiveness Kari Feinberg. “We’re grateful to METRO for being a partner in removing barriers and expanding access.”
Families are encouraged to contact their student’s school administration to request a METRO Q® Card.
