New METRO Bus Shelter Becomes a Symbol of Tiger Pride

Tiger pride was on full display this morning at Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center High School. Students, teachers and faculty joined METRO and Avenue CDC to cut the ribbon on the Authority's newest student-designed bus shelter.

Attendees were treated to performances by the school's drumline, cheerleading and dance teams and Mariachi Band. The Black Knights JROTC opened the ceremony with a Presentation of the Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance.

METRO Board Chair Sanjay Ramabhadran thanked partners for their role in the project, highlighting the importance of giving local youth the ability to make a difference in their neighborhoods.

"What better way to empower our children than by allowing them to make positive real-world changes in their communities," said Ramabhadran. Winning submissions from two students, Sebastian Barron and Sofia Zamarripa, now decorate a METRO bus shelter at the intersection of Tidwell Road and Irvington Boulevard. The stop is a vital transportation point, connecting residents to schools, health care facilities, grocery stores and other METRO routes.

Sam Houston MSTC Principal Dr. Diego Linares offered words of praise for the collaboration.

"We are students. We are faculty, and we are people who really care about the community and its beautification," said Linares. "Let's continue this partnership for students and residents."

Claudia Sanchez, director of community initiatives at Avenue CDC, said bus shelters are a priority for Northside residents, serving as a gateway to essential destinations and enhancing quality of life.

"We continue to build a better, healthier and viable Northside community," said Sanchez. "And we look forward to collaborating on future projects."
