METRO and Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI), have once again joined forces to help prevent tragedies around railroad tracks and trains by observing Rail Safety Week from September 19-25. This year, OLI will celebrate 50 years of rail safety education efforts.
The annual safety awareness campaign aims to empower people to make safe decisions around tracks and rail crossings. METRO is emphasizing the importance of safe behaviors through a weeklong series of posts on its Facebook and Twitter pages and through the distribution of safety materials along METRORail lines. The public is also encouraged to tune into METRO's Next Stop podcast to listen to a discussion on the topic.
“Rail Safety Week concentrates the public awareness and education campaigns that occur all year long across the country into one jam-packed week," said OLI Executive Director Rachel Maleh. "Each day focuses on a different audience with customized rail safety messages in support of our core mission – saving lives."
Ramona Crayton, METRO manager of Transit Safety Educations Programs said safety is METRO's top priority.
"We're proud to partner with organizations like OLI because safety begins with education," said Crayton. "We want the public to understand that an unsafe decision around tracks and trains — whether it’s ignoring railway signage and signals, or sending a text while driving — can have serious consequences."
