The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) will mark Transit Equity Day on Friday, Feb. 4, by honoring the legacy and contributions of Rosa Parks, the civil rights icon who challenged segregation in 1955 by refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. Starting this week, METRO will install a commemorative seat at the front of transit vehicles dedicated to Parks' act of courage. Her arrest galvanized the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and led to the United States Supreme Court decision that declared segregation on buses unconstitutional.
METRO is recognizing Parks with a tribute on local buses, Park & Ride, METRORapid, METRORail, METROLift and curb2curb with a special yellow seat cover that reads, "Dedicated to the Memory of Rosa Parks."
Each year, transit organizations across the nation recognize Transit Equity Day on Rosa Parks' birthday. The national day of action recognizes her act of defiance, strength, and dignity while promoting access to and investment in public transportation as a civil right and strategy to combat climate change.
