METRO hopes to save lives on Houston area railways and roads through its partnership with two major safety initiatives.
Every year, 2,100 people are killed or seriously injured in North America when they engage in unsafe activities around trains and tracks.
METRO is emphasizing the importance of safe behaviors in coordination with Rail Safety Week in a weeklong series of posts on its Facebook and Twitter pages and through the distribution of safety materials. The annual safety awareness campaign led by Operation Lifesaver, Inc. aims to empower people to keep themselves safe near train tracks and crossings.

In partnership with Vision Zero Houston, METRO is also asking for the entire community's help to make the region's roads safer. The goal of the city of Houston initiative is to end all traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. Vision Zero Houston aims to address street safety through street design, speed management, and community engagement, and improve equitable outcomes for those disproportionately impacted by traffic deaths and serious injuries.
Community members can join in the commitment with three steps:
1. Take the Safe Streets Pledge
2. Identify Dangerous Streets on the Map
3. Fill out the Survey to Identify which Projects Should be Prioritized
