The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has awarded the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) with its highest honor for rail safety excellence. METRO has been named the winner of APTA’s 2019 Rail Safety Gold Award for transit agencies with more than 20 million passenger trips annually.
Each year, the organization recognizes bus transportation and paratransit systems that have implemented projects or initiatives that achieved documented success in addressing specific safety program areas.
"We are truly honored to be the 2019 recipient of this national award,” said METRO President & CEO Tom Lambert. “Our successes are the result of teamwork. They're only possible because of the dedication exhibited by employees throughout this organization and the commitment of the METRO Board. Safety is a core value for us.”
APTA chose METRO for its successful partnership with the city of Houston's traffic timing group to develop and implement a traffic and rail signaling project called SmartSync, which:
- Decreased crashes in Houston's Central Business District by 35 percent,
- Allowed the transit authority to run the same six-minute service using one fewer train, translating into an annual operating cost savings of $250,000, and
- Reduced wait times for all road users resulting in smoother traffic and pedestrian flow.
