Janitorial safety: Reducing risks from cleaning chemicals

Janitors work with powerful cleaning chemicals every day, often in tight spaces with little ventilation. A single mistake — like mixing products or storing them wrong — can lead to burns, breathing problems, or dangerous chemical reactions. Keep your team safe by following these tips.

Learn to save a life during American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month, a perfect time to strengthen your team’s lifesaving skills. Sudden cardiac arrest can strike without warning, and fast CPR and AED use can double a person’s chance of survival.

Schedule a private CPR, AED, and First Aid class for your workplace and prepare your team to act with confidence in an emergency. Our American Heart Association–certified course is taught by a DWC safety instructor, meets OSHA requirements, and gives hands-on practice in CPR, AED use, and first aid for common injuries.

Classes are available in English or Spanish, for up to eight participants, and can be held at your worksite or a DWC facility. Make American Heart Month count — equip your employees with skills they can use to save a life on or off the job. To reserve training and get your certification, call 512-804-4610 or email  SafetyTraining@tdi.texas.gov.

A man blows on his hands to warm them as he works in protective gear outside on a snow-covered refinery.

Protect outdoor workers from frostbite and hypothermia

Texas winters can bring sudden cold snaps that put outdoor workers at risk — especially those in construction, agriculture, utilities, oil and gas, delivery services, and other outdoor jobs. Frostbite can start with numbness, tingling, or skin that turns pale or waxy. Hypothermia may cause shivering, confusion, slow speech, or clumsiness. Both require quick action.

Dress in warm layers, protect hands, feet, and ears, and take breaks in sheltered areas to warm up. Change out of wet clothing as soon as possible, stay hydrated, and watch your coworkers for early warning signs. If someone shows symptoms, move them to a warm area, replace wet clothes, wrap them in blankets, and get medical help right away.
