Every year, backover incidents lead to serious injuries and fatalities in construction zones and workplaces. These incidents often happen when drivers lose sight of people, objects, or vehicles behind them. That's why OSHA has launched the #MirrorCheck initiative to raise awareness and provide resources that help workers and employers adopt safety practices to prevent backovers and save lives.
Visit OSHA’s Preventing Backovers webpage or download DWC’s free Vehicle Backing Safety Fact Sheet (English/Spanish) for more information. DWC safety training specialists and free on-site consultants are also available to help meet your organization’s safety training needs. Contact safetytraining@tdi.texas.gov or 800-252-7031, option 2 for more information.
Did you know that every six minutes, an underground utility line is damaged in the U.S. — often simply because someone dug without calling 811 first? August 11 was recognized nationwide as “811 Day,” a reminder for everyone to contact 811 before starting any digging project, big or small. Striking a buried gas, electric, water, or communications line can cause serious injuries, put entire worksites at risk, disrupt vital services, and lead to costly construction delays. Check out the 811 Day Toolkit and make safe digging part of your everyday safety practices.
