Commercial fishing on the Texas Gulf Coast brings in millions of pounds of seafood each year, but the work comes with serious risks. These tips highlight what it takes to safely bring seafood to your plate.

As Gulf Coast fishermen know too well, the sea can turn dangerous in an instant. With hurricane season peaking from August through October, Texas businesses — especially those along the coast — must be ready to protect both operations and workers. Strong winds, flooding, and power outages can disrupt supply chains, damage property, and endanger lives.
Now is the time to:
-
Review your emergency plan: Train employees on roles, evacuation routes, and communication procedures.
-
Secure buildings and equipment: Board up windows, anchor outdoor items, and test sump pumps.
-
Protect key records: Back up data and store important documents offsite or in the cloud.
-
Stock emergency supplies: Include water, food, first aid kits, flashlights, and weather radios.
-
Check fire protection systems: Ensure portable extinguishers are accessible and employees know how to use them.
-
Prepare for power loss: Charge devices and ensure backup power systems are ready.
-
Stay informed: Monitor alerts from NOAA and local authorities for watches, warnings, and evacuation notices.
-
Support your team: Check in with workers who may need extra help during a storm or evacuation.
Whether your business is on the water or inland, preparation can reduce downtime, speed recovery, and save lives.

Every 39 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies in a drunk-driving crash. That’s more than 13,000 people killed each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Texas workers and employers can help bring those numbers down.
From August 13 through Labor Day, law enforcement across the country will step up efforts to stop impaired drivers as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over National Mobilization Campaign. Police will run sobriety checkpoints and increase patrols to raise awareness. The goal is simple: prevent crashes, injuries, and deaths.
Don’t risk it. Plan a sober ride before you go out.
