Silo safety: Protecting lives on the farm

Farm silos claim lives every year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded 107 deaths between 2011-2018, with 72% caused by engulfment. Notably, 20% of engulfment victims were under 18. Use these tips to protect yourself and others from these often-overlooked silo dangers.

Grain Safety Stand Up Week: March 24-28, 2025

Building on the importance of agricultural safety, mark your calendars for the 2025 Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week scheduled for March 24-28, 2025. This yearly event aims to make grain handling safer for everyone in the industry. 

Key details include: 

  • Daily topics covering fatigue, emergency planning, workplace cleanliness, and safety in flat storage and ground piles. 
  • Spanish language sessions available for some topics. 

This week-long focus on safety is valuable for all grain industry participants, from large operations to small family farms. 

As with silo safety, small changes in grain handling can make a big difference in worker safety. By participating in Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week, you can learn how to prevent accidents and save lives.
