Update: GL 26-2001 Physician Life Support Certification Requirements
On Oct.16, 2025, HHSC issued GL 26-2001 notifying FEMCs that the 2016 Department of State Health Services (DSHS) letter is no longer valid. The 2016 DSHS letter allowed FEMC physicians to use ABEM and ABOEM certifications to meet the life support certifications required by Texas Administrative Code Title 25 (25 TAC) Section 131.44(d)(5) (now at 26 TAC Section 509.45(d)(5)).
In response to stakeholder feedback about GL 26-2001, HHSC is currently initiating a rule project to amend 26 TAC Section 509.45(d)(5). Given the many variables associated with rulemaking, we are unable to provide a specific timeframe for the project, but HHSC will notify providers via GovDelivery about any major updates, including when we post the rule for comment.
