Memorandum

August 7, 2017

From: Julie A. Eklund

Subject: Guidance for Reporting TSI-Status after TSIA Writing Benchmark Change

On July 27, 2017, the full Board approved the proposed rule change to update the college readiness benchmark for writing. The newly approved benchmark is as follows:

  • a placement score of at least 340, and an essay score of at least a 4; or
  • a placement score of less than 340, and an ABE Diagnostic level of at least 4, and an essay score of at least 5

The TSI-status of all students enrolled as of Fall 2017 should reflect the new TSIA writing college readiness benchmarks. If a student had been previously reported as not TSI-met in writing, but would now be considered TSI-met under the new benchmarks, his or her status should be updated on Item #60 on the CBM002 starting on the Fall 2017 report.

Because of this change, institutions may request an extension of up to a month to turn in the Fall 2017 CBM002. To request an extension, please write directly to Julie Eklund (Julie.Eklund@thecb.state.tx.us), and copy Melissa Humphries (Melissa.Humphries@thecb.state.tx.us).

We know there will be challenges in implementing this change, and we appreciate your efforts to make this work for students. If you encounter significant barriers as you make these updates, please contact Melissa Humphries at Melissa.Humphries@thecb.state.tx.us or (512) 427-6546, so we can work with you to find a solution.
