The Health and Human Services Commission Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services is hosting a two-part, interactive webinar series titled, “More Than Just Signs: Myth-Busting Educational Interpreting.”
This series, which will be held June 5 and July 24, is designed to challenge common misconceptions about the role of interpreters in educational settings. Participants will explore the critical distinction between access and instruction, examine the interpreter’s role within the educational team, and uncover the often overlooked nuances of language and student needs in K–12 environments.
Each session will be led by Jennifer Hunter, special education specialized supports grant facilitator with Region 11 Education Service Center; and Emily Heise, statewide coordinator of deaf and hard of hearing services at the Texas Education Agency.
Through real-world scenarios, guided discussion and reflection, Hunter and Heise will equip interpreters with a deeper understanding of how to effectively support deaf and hard of hearing students who use interpreters. Whether you are new to the field or seeking to expand your expertise, this training will leave you better prepared to support students in reaching their full academic potential.

These webinars will be presented in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English. CART (captioning) and ASL/English interpretation will be provided.
