Recognizing Assistive Technology Awareness Day in Texas

Assistive Technology Awareness Day, recognized on April 22, highlights the important role that assistive technology (AT) plays in the lives of Texans with disabilities. AT includes a wide range of tools and devices that help individuals perform tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible.

AT can take many forms, from low-tech solutions like magnifiers and adaptive easy-grip or specially designed utensils to more advanced tools such as screen readers, communication devices, and other supports that help with mobility and daily activities. These technologies provide Texans with disabilities access to education, employment, and everyday activities across all areas of life.

Assistive technology can make a meaningful difference in real, everyday situations. For a student, it may mean using text-to-speech tools to keep up with reading assignments. For an employee, it could be speech recognition software that supports productivity on the job. For others, it may be a mobility device or augmentative communication aid that increases independence at home and in the community.

Texans can explore AT resources and services through programs such as the Texas Technology Access Program, which offers device demonstrations, short-term loans, and training opportunities. Additional support may be available through local schools, workforce programs, and community-based organizations. Today, built-in or “native” accessibility features are found on many common technology devices like Siri or Voice Over on an iPhone or Narrator or Magnifier on a Windows desktop or laptop computer. To try these out next time you use an iPhone, simply tell Siri “Hey Siri turn on Voice Over” and begin exploring the text on your phones screen by touch using text to speech.

Access to these AT can help remove barriers and expand opportunities, supporting greater independence and participation across Texas communities.

In recognition of AT Awareness Day, Governor Greg Abbott “encourages all Texans to educate themselves about assistive technologies and to recognize their positive influence.”
