April is Autism Acceptance and Awareness Month, a time to recognize Texans on the autism spectrum and encourage greater understanding of autism across our schools, workplaces, communities, and public services.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, is a developmental disability that can affect communication, behavior, sensory processing, and social interaction. Because autism exists on a spectrum, each person’s strengths, needs, and experiences may look different. Across Texas, individuals with autism contribute to their communities every day as students, employees, business owners, advocates, family members, and leaders. Their perspectives and talents are valuable in every part of Texas life.
Families, educators, employers, service providers, and community organizations can all play a role in supporting Texans with autism. Some of that support may include:
- clear and accessible communication,
- sensory considerations, when possible,
- appropriate services and accommodations,
- support for educational and employment goals, and
- access to community-based resources.
Texas families seeking support may be able to access autism-related services and programs through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and their Children’s Autism Program, which provides focused applied behavior analysis services through local communities and organizations. Additional supports through HHSC include the Children with Special Health Care Needs Services Program, behavioral health and developmental disability services, and certain Medicaid waiver programs depending on eligibility. The Texas Workforce Commission’s Vocational Rehabilitation program can help youth and adults with autism achieve their employment goals. Texans can also register to attend a webinar on Wednesday, April 29, focused on preparing learners with autism for employment.
In his proclamation, Governor Abbott encourages all Texans to learn more about autism, and to support the individuals, health care providers, and loved ones who work tirelessly to improve outcomes.
