Texas Crime Stoppers May 2023 Newsletter
Student Crime Stoppers (SCS) of Amarillo, Inc. was created by Corporal Larry Barlow in August 1991 as an independent community/campus program. SCS of Amarillo was the third independent campus program in the state covering four local high schools in Amarillo. SCS of Amarillo expanded into Canyon ISD in 1992. Bushland ISD, River Road ISD and Highland Park ISD were added in 1998 covering 47,000 students. In early 2021, the Texas Crime Stoppers Council approved a territory expansion to include Groom ISD, Panhandle ISD, White Deer ISD, and Claude ISD. The program now covers 3,700 square miles, 53,000 students, and 110 schools throughout the Texas panhandle. The program is also considering an expansion to include 13 private/charter schools in Amarillo. Currently, SCS of Amarillo has a student board of 18, 32 school liaison/student resource officers and four civilian adult members making up the adult advisory board.
SCS of Amarillo is not just a campus program as it serves the entire community within the four counties it operates. SCS of Amarillo has seen a large increase in tips within the community, especially underage crimes over the past four years. SCS of Amarillo is very active in the community by holding numerous community events, Kids ID cards, public speaking events, and engagements with other local 501(c)(3) non-profits in the city totaling 400 hours per year.
I feel the success of the program is due to taking an active role within the schools and community. Throughout the week, I visit numerous schools to interact with the students. If we can get the students to buy-in and truly believe they are anonymous, then the tips will continue to increase.
