Kathyna is a talented artist who is also a middle school teacher, mother, and grandmother. In 1999 she suddenly contracted Transverse Myelitis leaving her paraplegic requiring the use of a motorized wheelchair. She says her condition does not define who she is and does not get in her way of fulfilling her personal and employment goals.

Kathyna notes that Texas Workforce Solutions-Vocational Rehabilitation Services helped her return to work as a teacher and continue her passion as a painter. She says she is delighted to have been selected as the winner of the 2021 DEAM poster competition. The GCPD is excited to uplift stories of excellence in hiring people with disabilities and spotlight outstanding work by this talented Texas artist with a disability.

America's Recovery: Powered by Inclusion

Governor Abbott issued a proclamation declaring October to be Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) in Texas. He encourages all Texans, “to recommit ourselves to promoting disability employment awareness, creating more inclusive workplaces, and cultivating more employment opportunities for Texans with disabilities.” A diverse, inclusive economy is a strong economy.

Each October, Texas celebrates DEAM with job fairs, public awareness events, and a statewide #HireAbility campaign to promote employment opportunities for Texans with disabilities. As part of the public awareness campaign, the GCPD partners with the Texas Workforce Commission to distribute free Texas DEAM posters to thousands of Texas employers and businesses to educate them on the talents and abilities of workers with disabilities, while sharing valuable employer resources through the HireAbility website. The posters are intended to spark conversations on the employment of people with disabilities in businesses and organizations across the Lone Star State.
