This October marks the 75th observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)! While things may look different this year, the Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities is excited to take this time to uplift stories of excellence in hiring people with disabilities and spotlight outstanding work by a talented Texas artist with a disability. The deadline for both our Lex Frieden Employment Awards and the Disability Employment Awareness Month art competition is Friday, September 18th. If you fit either of these categories or know someone who does, continue reading below!
Do you know a talented artist with a disability who would like to have their art featured in a statewide campaign to advance the employment of Texans with disabilities? We want their entries! Each October, Texas celebrates NDEAM with job fairs, public awareness events, and a statewide #HireAbility campaign to promote employment opportunities for Texans with disabilities. As part of the public awareness campaign, we partner with the Texas Workforce Commission to distribute free NDEAM posters to thousands of Texas employers and businesses to educate them on the talents and abilities of workers with disabilities, while sharing valuable employer resources through the HireAbility website. The posters will feature original work from an outstanding Texas artist, along with their picture and personal statement, and the national NDEAM theme. This year's theme is "Increasing Access and Opportunity."
The posters are intended to spark conversations on the employment of people with disabilities in businesses and organizations across the Lone Star State. The winning artist will also be featured in GCPD's virtual Lex Frieden Employment Awards Ceremony, and may be acknowledged in a statewide press release. Help spark a conversation!
The deadline for entry is September 18th, 2020. Original 2D and 3D art in all media are eligible. We look forward to seeing your art!

For more than thirty years, GCPD has worked to highlight the outstanding efforts of employers to hire and retain employees with disabilities. The Lex Frieden Employment Awards honor best practices in hiring and accommodating employees with disabilities with the aim of sparking a wider conversation. Research shows businesses that prioritize the inclusion of people with disabilities outperform their peers, experiencing both cultural and tangible financial benefits. The new realities brought by COVID-19 make this all the more important— as we move towards economic recovery, these businesses and their employees can provide valuable insight on innovation, inclusion, and overcoming challenges.
Nominations are due by September 18th, 2020. Read more about last year's winners and nominate an outstanding employer today!
