FROM THE DIRECTOR

We’ve finally arrived at 2017 and the 85th Texas Legislative Session has begun! It is an exciting time when our office and the Capitol area bustles with visitors and stakeholders seeking to have their voices heard about everything that matters to Texans until May 29 when session adjourns for another two years. Over the upcoming months this newsletter will keep you up-to-date with legislative proceedings that affect our industry.

I want to mention how excited I am about a few projects returning to Texas, and those shooting here for the first time. USA Network’s Queen of the South was picked up for Season 2 and is gearing up for production in Dallas this spring.

I’m also excited about a new project we’ve been working to bring to the state, National Geographic's limited series The Long Road Home, shooting in Killeen and elsewhere in the state. The project will be teaming with members of our armed forces at Fort Hood, who have been extremely generous with their time and resources during pre-production. Because of this project, we will be conducting another P.A. Workshop as part of our Workforce Training Program, this time teaming with our Texas veterans.

Finally, keep your eye out this spring for the April 8 premiere of AMC’s new series, The Son, based on the novel written by UT Michener Center for Writers alum, Philipp Meyer. Talent and crew spent over four months filming all throughout central Texas and beyond, so we are all looking forward to seeing Texas through their lens.

Corpus Christi FFTX Certificate
On a scouting trip to Corpus Christi in December, we presented the city with their Film Friendly Certificate alongside local filmmakers. We look forward to many more this year!

TFC ON THE ROAD

Next month, we will be introducing the Texas Film Commission Regional Snapshots — eight infographics that show the impact of Texas’ moving image industry on communities across the state. It is a first for our office to highlight the unique traits and industry resources that make each region attractive to filmmakers, production companies and video game developers, and we look forward to your feedback once we release them. Stay tuned for a special newsletter about them in February.

In March, we will debut our second Film Trail showcasing shooting locations statewide. To coincide with the Trail’s release, we’re planning an exciting event at the State Capitol and will share those details soon.

We’re also gearing up for SXSW, where we will have a trade show booth to promote the state’s filming and gaming resources, plus a SXSW Game Development Meet Up where we will showcase the strength of the Texas video game and animation industry. Stay tuned to our social channels as to when and where the event will take place.
