Juneteenth is Monday, June 19 and a centerpiece of this celebration locally will be “Opal’s Walk for Freedom.” As you may know, Dr. Opal Lee is a beloved resident of Fort Worth and as an organization, the City of Fort Worth will be participating as a group in the event. We encourage our employees, family and friends to join in.
Participants will walk two-and-a-half miles on Monday, June 19, to commemorate the Juneteenth holiday and the freedom of enslaved people in Texas. The walk recognizes the two-and-a-half years it took for the news and enforcement of freedom to reach our state. This year’s walk will be covered live on NBC5 and other affiliates around the country.
The cost to register is $39.74, which includes a commemorative race T-shirt that all City of Fort Worth teammates will wear on race day. Please know that every penny of your registration makes a difference. ($6.19 will be donated to the soon-to-debut National Juneteenth Museum and the rest goes to producing Opal’s Walk.)
