Essential Functions
The Office of the
General Counsel (OGC) works as a team to provide legal advice and direction to
ERS' trustees and staff to enable them to undertake their duties to act in the
best interest of ERS' members and retirees effectively and more efficiently. The Legal Assistant provides assistance to
staff attorneys within the OGC.

Essential Functions (includes the tasks
listed below, but not limited to):
- Assists in
handling litigation matters, including drafting, reviewing and editing
pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, petitions, summary judgments, legal
correspondence, discovery requests and responses, and other documents.
- Coordinates the
service and/or preparation of and response to subpoenas, notices of deposition,
depositions on written questions, and other legal documents; coordinates the
scheduling and drafting of interrogatories, requests for production, requests
for admissions, and other requests for information.
- Works closely
with attorneys handling fraud investigations, subrogation and collection
matters.
- Assists the
agency Public Information Act (PIA) attorney to track and respond to PIA
requests.
- Researches and
analyzes legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, and
opinions; prepares legal analysis and briefs cases, orders, and proposals for
decision; shepardizes case law and related legal research.
- Updates and
monitors attorneys’ calendars and case files, including electronic case
records.
- Maintains
complex administrative, security and other records of a confidential nature.
- Leads or
participates on special projects, task forces and committees.
- Attends work
regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
- Complies with
all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards
of conduct.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Your application for employment must reflect how you meet each of the following minimum qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year
college or university. Each year of
related experience over the required may be substituted for one year (30
semester hours) of required college credit.
- Three (3) years of experience
performing responsible work as a legal assistant or similar experience, two (2)
years of which include experience in litigation-related work.
- Three (3) years of progressive experience
using personal computers for word processing; spreadsheet software; database
software; preparing correspondence; drafting and reviewing legal documents.
Preferred Qualifications

4. Experience working with and responding
to multiple attorneys.
5. Experience performing legal research;
preparing litigation and/or administrative appeals for attorney review;
experience working with the Texas Public Information Act.

Work
is performed in an office environment. This position may require access to privileged,
confidential, or sensitive data. ERS
