Youth Mental Health First Aid
Blended Training
According to House Bill 3, a school district shall require each district employee who regularly interacts with students enrolled at the district to complete an evidence-based mental health training program designed to provide instruction to participants regarding the recognition and support of children and youth who experience a mental health or substance use issue that may pose a threat to school safety.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is evidence-based and meets HB 3 requirements. It teaches the participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents including depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders and substance use disorder. This course is FREE and is open to all ISD staff.
This Blended Course includes 2 hours of self-paced online pre-work that must be completed prior to attending the 5 hour in-person portion of the class held at Region 8 ESC.

Virtual PD - Suicide Prevention in Schools Best Practices and Protocols for Suicide Prevention in Schools Sept. 9, 2024
Suicide is now the 2nd leading cause of death for children ages 10-24. This session will cover evidence-based best practices set out by the AWARE and Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) on the appropriate suicide prevention protocols to help school staff in serving students. Protocols include screening for risk, safety planning, connecting with parents/guardians, and supporting transitions and re-entry back to school after a suicide attempt or hospitalization.
