Holiday relief for drivers on the Loop 1604 North Expansion
TxDOT shifts construction schedule at I-10 interchange to maximize progress and allow for minimal closures from Thanksgiving through the end of the year.
TxDOT is providing relief to drivers this holiday season by shifting the construction schedule at the Loop 1604/I-10 interchange to maximize progress and minimize traffic impacts on the busy corridor. From Thanksgiving through the end of the year, the schedule allows for 29 days with no major closures at the interchange.
Since January, work focused on installing steel beams as crews construct flyover ramps at the interchange. Steel beam work is currently 63% complete with 95 beams in place. In the coming months, the first flyover ramp is scheduled to open, connecting drivers from eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10.
The following schedule of weekend construction at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange includes the minimum number of closures required to maintain project momentum.
29 days with no closures All lanes will be open.
- Nov. 27 – 30 - Dec. 7 – 31
4 weekends with minor closures Some lanes and ramps will be closed. One highway may be closed in a single direction. More extensive closures may occur at night.
- Oct. 11 – 14 - Nov. 1 – 4 - Nov. 15 – 18 - Nov. 22 – 25
3 weekends with major closures One or more highways will be closed in both directions for an extended period of time. Ramps may be closed.
- Oct. 18 – 21 - Oct. 25 – 28 - Nov. 8 – 11
TxDOT is committed to scheduling closures that create the least impact to traffic and allow work to be completed safely. Drivers are encouraged to consider the construction schedule as they plan activities and keep this important information in mind:
- Weekends closures begin at 9 p.m. on Fridays and end at 5 a.m. on Mondays.
- Access to businesses will remain open during construction.
- Law enforcement officers will assist with traffic flow at intersections.
- Closures may open early if work is completed, and the road is safe for drivers.
- Detailed closure information will be shared each week as the work is confirmed.

All construction lane closures are weather permitting and subject to change. Stay connected on TxDOT San Antonio’s X feed, @TxDOTSanAntonio, and Facebook page, @TxDOTSanAntonioTX, for ongoing construction and traffic updates.
Background The Loop 1604 North Expansion is a Texas Clear Lanes project aimed at enhancing safety, improving mobility and reducing congestion along 23 miles of Loop 1604 from SH 16 (Bandera Rd.) to I-35. This $1.4 billion project includes the expansion of mainlanes from a 4- to 10-lane expressway, high-occupancy vehicles (HOV) lanes in each direction, a multi-level interchange at I-10, an innovative intersection at Blanco Road, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations on the frontage roads.
The expansion is planned in six segments with four segments currently under construction.
- Segment 1, from SH 16 to I-10, is on schedule to be complete and open to traffic by early 2025.
- Segment 2, the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange, is on schedule to be complete by 2027 with the first flyover ramp open by the end of 2024.
- Segment 3, from I-10 to US 281, is on schedule to be complete by the end of 2025.
- Segment 4, from US 281 to Redland Road, began construction April 2024.
Note: All closures are weather permitting and subject to change.
