New Annual Fluid Milk Transport Permit - Effective Jan. 1, 2018

On Monday, January 1, 2018, TxDMV will begin issuing an annual permit for the overweight transport of fluid milk. The 85th Texas Legislature created the new Annual Fluid Milk Transport Permit.

To qualify for this permit, a truck-tractor and semitrailer combination must be equipped with six axles and have:

  • 15 feet or more between the first (steer) axle of the truck-tractor and the first axle of the first axle group (drive axles),
  • 36 feet or more between the first drive axle and last trailer axle, and
  • 48 to 54 inches between the axles within each axle group.

The vehicle combination must be equipped with a roll stability support safety system and blind spot support systems.

Weights – The gross weight may not exceed 90,000 pounds. Axle weight limits are:

  • Truck-tractor single axle – legal weight
  • Two-axle group – 36,500 pounds total
  • Three-axle group – 42,500 pounds total

Size – Must be legal width, height and length.

Travel – Permit is valid for travel on the specific routes that have been approved by the Texas Department of Transportation. Permit applicant must select routes to be traveled at time of application. Vehicle may not travel on a load-restricted road or load-posted bridge when exceeding the posted capacity.

Permit holder is responsible for routing and obtaining current restrictions and information concerning hazardous weather-related road conditions prior to movement.

Fees – Annual permit fee is $1,200.

Windshield Sticker – Permit stickers must be affixed to the windshield of the permitted vehicles. Fluid Milk Transport Permits are mailed to applicants; they are not available at TxDMV offices.

Other Information – This permit is the only permit that may be used for the overweight transport of fluid milk.
