Keeping the Conversation Going - Water Safety
As we head into summer and swimming weather in Texas, we encourage you to promote Water Safety awareness with your networks not only for this month, but year-round, especially in the summer when drowning rates rise. Our goal is to reach as many individuals as possible to equip families with knowledge and resources to support water safety practices in Texas. Water Safety for Older Children - by Colin's Hope
This course covers basic water safety tips from Colin's Hope and focuses on specific water safety topics that are applicable to older youth. Topics include: water safety in open water (lakes, rivers, beaches), water safety at summer camps, field trips and pool parties, water safety while babysitting, peer pressure and risky behaviors around water related activities , water safety while boating, kayaking or using Stand Up Paddle Boarding and even water safety for swim team kids. Participants will also learn about the Colin's Hope Water Safety Quiz and be able to order (up to 150) English and/or Spanish Water Safety parent/caregiver water safety cards from www.colinshope.org to distribute to families and clients.
Achieve OnDemand: The Impact of Trauma in Home Visiting (Self-Paced Course)
Trauma shapes one’s view of the world and interactions with others. That’s why it surfaces and affects home visiting. You will learn how to recognize and understand the dynamics of trauma on families in the context of the community in which they live. While the experience of trauma varies from person to person and family to family, this course helps home visitors address how trauma affects parenting, decisions related to parenting, and dynamics in the parent-child relationship.

NEAR@Home is a two-generation process that provides home visitors with the skills and support to discuss ACEs and resilience safely, effectively, and respectfully with parents, focusing on hope and avoiding labeling. The two components of NEAR@Home include the NEAR@Home Toolkit and the NEAR@Home Facilitated Learning Process, both designed to complement one another and provide a holistic, reflective learning process that helps professionals to develop both the knowledge and skills needed to feel confident and competent when partnering with families who have experienced trauma.

Join the HHSC Office of Disability Prevention for Children, Safe Kids Austin, CommUnityCare, and the Central Texas Poison Center for a live webinar on how to keep children safe around medicine.
During this webinar, you will learn about the data and trends related to child medicine poisoning and tips for how to keep kids safe. You will also learn about a new partnership between Safe Kids Austin and CommUnityCare in Austin to train pediatric residents on medicine safety and distribute medicine safety information and locks to families.

The Health and Human Services Commission is excited to announce that Greg Hudnall, Ed.D., founder of Hope Squad, will present a three-hour talk called “What to Do After a Suicide: School Postvention.”
This virtual event is designed specifically for Texas school personnel, district staff, mental/behavioral health partners, and other community stakeholders involved in postvention.

HHS has also created a Baby Formula Shortage Social Media Toolkit that provides social media graphics and social media copy for posts, also available in Spanish, Vietnamese, and Haitian Creole. The graphics and copy help direct people to the HHS site and also offer resources to find infant formula, as well as guidance and best practices for families in need of baby formula.
Family and Youth Success Program - Request for Applications
The Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) Division seeks applications from qualified entities within the State of Texas to provide Family and Youth Success Program (FAYS) services.
About The Family and Youth Success Program
The FAYS program addresses family conflict and everyday challenges while promoting strong families and youth resilience. Some current topics FAYS addresses include bullying, school attendance, coping with divorce, and building healthy family relationships.
Across the state, FAYS partners with families with children 6-17 years of age; however, in some communities with identified need, FAYS Grantees will provide programming to families with younger children.
This Request for Applications (RFA) will award grants to provide programming statewide to promote strong families and youth resilience by funding local programs to increase protective factors in families and communities.

Basic Center Program
The Basic Center Program (BCP) provides temporary shelter and counseling services to youth who have left home without permission of their parents or guardians, have been forced to leave home, or other homeless youth who might otherwise end up in the law enforcement or in the child welfare, mental health, or juvenile justice systems. Additional services may include: street-based services; home-based services for families with youth at risk of separation from the family; drug abuse education and prevention services; and at the request of runaway and homeless youth, testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
