Training Tuesdays with PEI: Water Safety

"Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of five. In 2018, 91 children drowned in Texas but we can prevent these tragedies by supervising children in and around water. During this webinar we will discuss recurring trends in drowning incidents, increase water safety awareness, and promote drowning prevention efforts. This webinar was recorded on April 28,2020."

Training Tuesdays with PEI: Lessons Learned from the Describing Home Visiting Value Evaluation

Prevention and Early Intervention research and evaluation staff share lessons learned from the Describing Home Visiting Value Evaluation. For the past two years, PEI has worked with partners from the Child and Family Research Partnership at UT to explore the effects of evidence-based home visiting programs on short and long-term outcomes related to child safety and school readiness. In this course, you will learn about the findings of this series of evaluations, and how lessons learned can be incorporated into your own work with children and families. This webinar was recorded on January 21, 2020.

Water Safety Information and Resources

Water Safety

Summer in Texas means water fun for the whole family. It's vital that families understand the importance of water safety at home and at pools, lakes, rivers and the beach: children ages 1 to 4 have the highest rates of drowning, and drowning dangers aren't just limited to recreational swimming areas like pools, lakes, and rivers. Drowning can happen in less than 2 inches of water, and when babies drown, it most commonly happens in bathtubs, buckets, and toilets. Drowning is silent and can happen in seconds.

Water Safety Tip: Be Safe at the Waterpark

There is no consistent federal regulation of waterparks, so before you go, you’ll want to do your own research to make sure the park is safe.

Waterpark water safety tips

If you plan to take children to a waterpark, make sure you know their swimming abilities so they don’t end up on a ride or attraction that could be dangerous for them. Know the rules of the park and understand each ride or attraction before you allow a child to participate.

Do's:

  • Make sure everyone - even a grown-up - has a buddy.
  • Get life jackets for small children and weak swimmers. Many parks have them available to rent or borrow.
  • Supervise children at all times, even when lifeguards are present.
  • Have an adult stay within arm’s reach of small children and weak swimmers.
  • Watch children extra closely in wave pools, where it can be hard to spot a swimmer in trouble.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t let you children drink the water, even if it’s chlorinated. It can still contain bacteria.
  • Don’t let anyone pressure a child to go on a ride that seems out of their comfort zone. Remember, it’s supposed to be fun.
GTK

Water slides are the number one cause of injuries at waterparks, but wave pools carry the biggest risk of drowning.
