Summer in Texas means water fun for the whole family. It's vital that families understand the importance of water safety at home and at pools, lakes, rivers and the beach: children ages 1 to 4 have the highest rates of drowning, and drowning dangers aren't just limited to recreational swimming areas like pools, lakes, and rivers. Drowning can happen in less than 2 inches of water, and when babies drown, it most commonly happens in bathtubs, buckets, and toilets. Drowning is silent and can happen in seconds.
Here's five tips for water safety from GetParentingTips.com.
-
Choose a Water Watcher. whenever kids are around water, one responsible adult in your group must be the Water Watcher - this person has one role: to watch kids in or around water. Water Watchers should have nothing to distract them like cell phones, books or tablets. Share the responsibility with other adults so that everybody has a chance to enjoy the water!
-
Around open water? Everybody needs a life jacket! Water wings and pool floats are not safety devices and will not keep a child safe. Lifejackets must be the appropriate size for the user, appropriate for the activity, in good condition, and be Coast Guard approved. The best life jacket is the one you'll wear.
-
Pool Season? Safety first, every time. Hot tubs, spas, and pools should always be behind a fence that is at least 4 feet high. The fence should have a self-closing, self-latching gate that opens outward. The latches should be out of reach of children. If a pool area doesn't have these safeguards, don't swim there!
-
Kids should never swim without an adult. Children should never swim unattended, even if it's just a kiddie pool. Watching children around water is a big responsibility, and older children should never be in charge of watching younger children.
-
Water safety includes bathrooms. Never leave a baby or young child alone in the bath to go get something you forgot, even for a second! If you must leave the bathroom, take them with you. Make sure to keep bathroom doors closed and toilet lids down. Safety locks on toilets can help provide an extra layer of protection for curious toddlers.
