 May is Mental Health Awareness Month! We need your help empowering communities with resources to keep Texas children, youth, and families mentally healthy.
Mental health is important all year round, but the month of May focuses on this topic to raise awareness and reduce mental health stigma. We encourage you to promote mental health awareness and resources with your networks. Our goal for this month is to reach as many individuals as possible to equip families with knowledge and resources to support mental health practices in Texas.
Included in this toolkit:
- Daily messages to use in promoting mental health awareness;
- Mental health resources; and
- Sample mental health imagery to share and post.
The messages and links in this toolkit can be used as is or they can be customized in any way that works best for your community by directing to your prevention program’s information.
Thank you for continuing to support the children and families that live, work, and play in your communities!
To wrap up Mental Health Awareness month, PEI is hosting micro chats focusing on Maternal Mental Health and Children’s Mental Health. These chats will provide "bite-size" sessions identifying key points and resources.

 In 1999, Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation month to provide the nation to publicly show their appreciation for troops past and present. In honor of Military Appreciation Month here are the official days in May that are celebrated throughout our country.
Memorial Day this year is May 30, 2022 to honor the men and women who died while serving in the military.
PEI's military programs provide support for Texas families of children ages 0-17 in which one or both parents are serving, or have served, in the armed forces, reserves, or National Guard.

Virtual NFSN Standards of Quality Certification
This two-day virtual certification training details how the nationally adopted Standards of Quality for Family Strengthening and Support can enhance work with families. Whether you are setting up a new program or strengthening an existing one, the Standards provide a blueprint for implementing best practice.
Participants who complete the full 2-day session will receive a certificate from the National Family Support Network that is valid for two years.

PEI Fatherhood EFFECT Grantees are hosting a variety of summits across Texas:
Houston
DePelchin Children's Center's "Dad's Make a Difference" Summit will take place on Friday, June 10th and Saturday June 11th.
- Day One will host fathers and professionals around the community to provide topics and discussion around father's rights, co-parenting, and empowering fathers through various services around the state. Networking and resource opportunities will also be offered throughout the day.
- Day Two is devoted to fathers, co-parents, and their children. Families will hear from other inspiring fathers and professionals who are committed to helping fathers reach their greatest potential as a dad. Children in attendance on Day Two will get to participate in a variety of fun activities to promote family engagement and play,

The Impact of Trauma in Home Visiting
Trauma shapes one’s view of the world and interactions with others. That’s why it surfaces and affects home visiting. You will learn how to recognize and understand the dynamics of trauma on families in the context of the community in which they live. While the experience of trauma varies from person to person and family to family, this course helps home visitors address how trauma affects parenting, decisions related to parenting, and dynamics in the parent-child relationship.

Training Tuesdays with PEI: Water Safety
"Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of five. In 2018, 91 children drowned in Texas but we can prevent these tragedies by supervising children in and around water. Implementing Tools to Enhance Home Visiting

Registration is now open for the Virtual Research and Evaluation Conference on Self-Sufficiency (RECS) 2022, convened by the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation in the Administration for Children and Families.
Virtual RECS 2022 will provide an opportunity to hear the latest findings from evaluations of social welfare programs and policies, discuss ways to incorporate findings into the design and implementation of programs, and develop strategies for future evaluations. The conference will focus on programs, policies, and services that support families on the path to economic self-sufficiency and well-being. This year’s conference will feature presentations and discussions on the following topics:

 Demonstrating Policy Effectiveness to Promote Black Youth
The Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has released the following funding opportunity announcement.

This notice solicits applications for projects for the Demonstrating Policy Effectiveness to Promote Black Youth Mental Health Initiative. This initiative seeks to identify health and wellness policies that are successful in improving Black youth mental health, including suicide prevention.
Standing Announcement for Residential Services for Unaccompanied Children
ORR is announcing the availability of funds under this Standing Notice of Funding Opportunity (SNOFO) to seek shelter care providers, including group homes and transitional foster care. At the time of application, care providers do not have to be licensed (state child placement license and facility license) by an appropriate licensing agency to provide residential, group, or foster care services for children. However, care providers must be fully licensed (state child placement license and facility license) prior to accepting children for placement within the timeframes specified in the SNOFO. Basic Center Program
The Basic Center Program (BCP) provides temporary shelter and counseling services to youth who have left home without permission of their parents or guardians, have been forced to leave home, or other homeless youth who might otherwise end up in the law enforcement or in the child welfare, mental health, or juvenile justice systems. BCPs work to establish or strengthen community-based programs that meet the immediate needs of runaway and homeless youth and their families. BCPs provide youth under 18 years of age with emergency shelter, food, clothing, counseling and referrals for health care. BCPs can provide up to 21 days of shelter for youth and seeks to reunite young people with their families, whenever possible, or to locate appropriate alternative placements. Additional services may include: street-based services; home-based services for families with youth at risk of separation from the family; drug abuse education and prevention services; and at the request of runaway and homeless youth, testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
