Each year, the Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) Division recognizes people across Texas who go the extra mile to serve their communities. We're looking for those people and organizations that have created solutions to problems, made positive, lasting changes for the community they live in, and brought people together with their resilience, care, and kindness.

In alignment with PEI’s Five-Year Strategic Plan, PEI is developing a series of think tanks to dive deeper, problem solve, and brainstorm some specific challenges to creating a strong prevention infrastructure.

This Spring and Summer, Sasha, Sarah, and the PEI Leadership team will hit the road for the 2022 Listening Tour. The pandemic forced us to shift our 2020 listening tour to virtual but we’re ready to visit our grantees and witness firsthand the amazing work being done by you.
Between May and October we would love to meet with your program staff; meet with parents and youth; talk to a group of home visitors; participate in parent cafes; attend a local meeting; participate in an open house or ribbon cutting event; meet with key stakeholders in your community; or connect with you virtually!

As a home visitor, building strong relationships that support each member of the family’s growth and development is essential to your job. Whether establishing a relationship between parent and child or home visitor and parent, the principles and best practices are the same. By establishing a long-term relationship with families, you can model ways to interact that parents can adopt with their children. This course offers practical ways you can relate to parents that will motivate them to stay engaged with you.

Early childhood experiences can strengthen or disrupt a child’s social, emotional and mental well-being. Thus, it is important to establish sound emotional and mental health early in life for children to have a strong foundation that supports them in all other aspects of their development. How do Family Resource Centers support the strengthening of Native American communities? There are numerous Family Resource Centers (FRCs) across the U.S. that have been developed by both urban and rural Native American communities. These FRCs support their communities through culturally-relevant programs, supports, and opportunities that honor and reflect their values and traditions. This webinar will feature two of them - the Forest County Potawatomi FRC in Wisconsin and the Hupa FRC run by the Hoopa Tribe in California.

Together with leading maternal and infant health organizations, SMFM is hosting a live online course titled, "Using Quality Improvement and Safety Science to Eliminate Pregnancy-Related Racial and Ethnic Health Inequities." Led by Drs. Allison Bryant, Andy Combs, Christina Davidson, and Chris Pettker, the course will feature a multi-disciplinary line up of speakers and offer both CNE and CME.
The CDC released a report on April 1st containing multiple studies on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescents. Based on a national survey of over 7,000 students in grades 9-12 that ran from January to June of 2021, the report offers up-to-date statistics on issues impacting the well-being of adolescents. Some of the findings:
- Survey participants were more likely to experience mental health issues.
- There was an increase in self-reported participation in risky behaviors such as drinking alcohol and using tobacco.
- Participants reported increased rates of physical and emotional abuse from family members.
- Increased reports of experiencing racism, hunger, and homelessness.
Findings from ABES during the COVID-19 pandemic can help guide parents, teachers, school administrators, community leaders, clinicians, and public health officials in decision-making for student support and school health programs.

This notice solicits applications for projects for the Demonstrating Policy Effectiveness to Promote Black Youth Mental Health Initiative. This initiative seeks to identify health and wellness policies that are successful in improving Black youth mental health, including suicide prevention.
