MLK Center celebrates Black History Month
Press Conference planned for February 3, 2014
What: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center will host a press conference on February 3, 2014 to kick off a month-long Black History celebration. Activities include the grand opening of the new MLK Center- Dallas Museum, the MLK Freedom Riders Black History month program, a special program hosted by the MLK Recreation Center, “The Barriers Have Been Broken: Where Do We Go From Here?” and a Black History Awards Banquet. All events are free and open to the public.
When: Monday, February 3, 2014 at 12:00pm- Press Conference and Grand Opening Celebration
Where: MLK Jr. Community Center- 2922 MLK Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75215
The public is cordially invited to help celebrate the official grand opening of the new MLK, Jr. Community Center – Dallas Museum on Monday, February 3, 2014 at 12:00p.m.
Festivities will include greetings from Council member Carolyn Davis and a tribute from Reverend Peter Johnson, a speaker with personal Jim Crow and Civil Rights Movement memories. Join a chorus of voices in singing familiar songs in the spirit of those courageous freedom marchers of the past. Hear again the powerful voice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rally a nation to live out the full meaning of its creed, “All men are created equal.” Get in step and advance The Dream!
When: Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 10:30am- Expose to Greatness: The MLK Freedom Riders Black History Month Program
Where: MLK Jr. Community Center- 2922 MLK Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75215
This is a chance to learn the history of the Freedom Ride in the past, present, and future. The MLK Freedom riders will lead breakout sessions to discuss their unique perspectives on the significance of the historical Freedom Ride of the Civil Rights movement.
When: Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 7:00pm- “The Barriers Have Been Broken: Where Do We Go from Here?”
Where: MLK Jr. Recreation Center- 2901 Pennsylvania Avenue, Dallas, TX 75215
Come out and enjoy soulful music, poetry, entertainment, and a stirring inspirational message. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Jerry Chambers, a veteran educator for Dallas Independent School District and member of the MLK Community Center Board of Directors.
