Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson votes in favor of City budget that prioritizes public safety, tax rate cut
DALLAS—Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson on Wednesday issued the following statement after voting in favor of the FY27 City budget, which passed on a 10-5 vote:
“Tonight, I voted with a supermajority of my City Council colleagues to support a budget that advances my highest priorities for Dallas: public safety, tax competitiveness, and government efficiency.
“The City Manager gave us a strong foundation with her proposed budget. Unfortunately, during the budget process, the council reversed a number of the City Manager’s proposed cost-saving measures. This pattern cannot continue. We cannot achieve long-term financial stability by taking two steps forward and then two steps back.
“That said, the City Manager’s proposed budget was such that, even with these reversals, the final budget is directionally sound and should serve the City well in the coming fiscal year.
“Public safety remains the City’s highest priority, with a focus on hiring more police officers and keeping police and firefighter salaries competitive. This budget concentrates on core services, leverages public-private partnerships to reduce reliance on taxpayer dollars, and expands the use of technology to improve efficiency at City Hall. Taken together, these measures enabled us to once again reduce our property tax rate, as we have done every year I have served as mayor.”
