Dallas Animal Services and Best Friends Animal Society Launch Pilot Program to Help Lost Pets Get Home Faster

DALLAS — Dallas Animal Services (DAS) and Best Friends Animal Society are launching a six-month pilot program to help lost pets return home before entering the shelter system.

Targeting areas where stray pets are most commonly found, the program will distribute 2,000 free PetHub ID tags. The tags feature a unique QR code that allows neighbors, field officers, and animal services staff to quickly connect found pets with their owners, helping reunite families faster and reducing unnecessary shelter admissions.

In addition to PetHub ID tags, the program will provide free dog collars, lost-pet flyers, and other resources to help residents keep pets safe and increase the likelihood of successful reunifications.

By focusing on community-based solutions, the initiative aims to keep pets where they belong—at home with their families.

"Communities play a vital role in helping lost pets get home," said Sophia Proler, Director of the South Central Region of Best Friends Animal Society. "By providing PetHub ID tags and focused, neighborhood-based resources, Best Friends and Dallas Animal Services are making it easier for residents, field officers, and animal services staff to work together to reunite pets with their families and help them stay safely at home."

Lost pets make up a significant portion of shelter intake nationwide. Many healthy, owned pets enter shelters simply because they lack visible identification or because community members do not have the tools needed to quickly reconnect them with their families. Programs that support neighborhood-based reunification efforts can help reduce shelter intake while minimizing stress on pets and their owners.

"This partnership gives pet owners practical tools to help ensure their pets can be identified and returned home quickly if they become lost," said Paul Ramon, Director of Dallas Animal Services. "By equipping residents with resources and empowering communities to assist with reunification efforts, we can help keep more pets with their families and reduce the number of animals entering the shelter."

The pilot program is part of ongoing efforts to create sustainable, community-driven solutions that support pet retention and reduce shelter overcrowding.

"As our city continues to expand partnerships across every area of service, this collaboration is a great example of how working together strengthens our resources, helps reduce shelter capacity, and reunites lost pets with their families more quickly,” said Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “We're grateful for this opportunity as a city, and we encourage our community to take full advantage to help keep their furry family members safe, secure, and at home."
