Dallas, Texas — As Independence Day approaches, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is reminding pet owners that fireworks can be frightening for pets and are one of the leading reasons animals become lost during the holiday. To help residents prepare for the holiday, Dallas Animal Services will host a free microchipping event on Sunday, June 28, from Noon to 4 p.m. at the shelter located at 1818 N. Westmoreland Road. Pet owners are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity before the busy holiday weekend.
"Fireworks may be fun for people, but they can be terrifying for pets," said Paul Ramon, director of Dallas Animal Services. "A microchip provides a permanent form of identification that can make all the difference when it comes to reuniting lost pets with their families."
Every year, shelters across the country see an increase in stray pets following Fourth of July celebrations as dogs and cats become startled by loud noises and escape from yards, homes, or walks. Last year, Dallas Animal Services saw 100 stray pets over the July 4 weekend. DAS is encouraging residents to take proactive steps now—including microchipping their pets—to help ensure they can be reunited quickly if they become lost.
In addition to microchipping, DAS recommends that pet owners:
-
Ensure pets wear collars with current identification tags
-
Verify that microchip registration information is up to date
-
Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays
-
Create a quiet, secure space where pets can feel safe
-
Exercise pets earlier in the day to help reduce anxiety
-
Leave pets at home during events and times when fireworks are occurring
