DALLAS — While many people celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, the loud noises can be frightening and stressful for dogs—especially those living in animal shelters.
To help provide comfort during one of the loudest nights of the year, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is inviting the community to participate in its annual Calming the Canines event on Saturday, July 4, from 9-11 p.m.
The event encourages volunteers and visitors to spend quiet time with shelter dogs during the fireworks. Participants are invited to bring a favorite book, a soothing instrument, and a chair or blanket. Community members can read aloud, play gentle music, or simply sit near the animals to help create a calming environment.
"Many shelter dogs experience stress and anxiety during fireworks," said Victoria Chittam Bennett, Assistant Director of Dallas Animal Services. "Having caring community members present to provide comfort can make a meaningful difference in helping them feel safe."
The event is free and open to the public.
