 First Friday Event
Join us on Friday, July 3, for our extended adoption hours event from 5:00–8:00 PM! The evening will feature local vendors, live music, and plenty of adoptable pets looking for their forever homes.
With higher foot traffic expected, we're looking for volunteers to help make the event a success. Volunteer opportunities include Adoption Assistance, Meet & Greeters, Lobby Ambassador, and Enrichment. Your support helps create a welcoming experience for our visitors while providing extra care and attention to our animals. We'd love to have you join us!
 Calming the Canines
Join us on Saturday, July 4, from 8:00–11:00 PM as we help comfort and entertain our shelter pets during the fireworks. We're looking for volunteers to assist with monitoring activity rooms, answering questions from guests, and helping ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. You'll also have the opportunity to spend quality time with our pets by handing out tasty treats, providing comfort, and helping keep kennels secure throughout the evening.
We're expecting a great turnout, as previous events have welcomed more than 200 guests. Sign up today to be part of this special evening!
Shelter AC Replacement
DAS is getting new air conditioning units! The new units will be installed between the dates of July 14th-17th and July 21st-23rd. During July 14th-17th, work will take place over the numbered rooms (8-15). The second phase of this replacement, July 21st-23rd, will be affecting the Rainbow and VIP rooms (Blue, Yellow, and Green).
During these installation periods, staff will be monitoring temperatures even more frequently throughout the building. We will be asking for additional volunteer support, as pets may experience warmer indoor temperatures while units are being installed. In addition, we will be promoting Staycations to get as many pets out of the building as possible during this time. Volunteers can assist with keeping pets cool by:
- Watching for signs of heat stress and notifying staff immediately.
- Make sure fans are powered on and working.
- Distributing cooling mats
- Hand out cooling towels
- Make puppy popsicles
Please note: All volunteers must park in the front parking lot, as the employee parking lot will be closed during the installation period.

Volunteer Shout Out!
Every newsletter we try to randomly select an active volunteer to recognize for all of their hard work! This month, we would like to shout out Mark Fry. Thank you for everything you do as a volunteer!
How long have you been volunteering with DAS?
I have been volunteering since February
Do you have any pets at home?
We have two canine rescues: Ruby and Betty
What is your favorite volunteer position?
Furtography is where I have focused most of my time but have also done Dog Walker, Medical Assistant, Meet & Greeter, and recently helped with a transport and will continue to try out different ways I can help.
What is your favorite part about volunteering with DAS?
I feel like I accomplish something when I can check off my list of dogs that need pictures, which also hopefully means a dog gets noticed sooner rather than later on Adopets. Every dog has a different personality, and some remind me of dogs that I have had over the years. I have my own little informal “favorite dog” from each visit that I inevitably show my friends.
Do you have a favorite DAS story to share?
Since I tend to seek out dogs with less-than-ideal or no pictures yet, the dogs I encounter are relatively new to the shelter. Many are still getting used to their new temporary home and can be quite timid. When I see these dogs later on weekend runs and see photos and videos of others interacting with them, I love seeing how some of them have come out of their shells, or better yet, have adopted or fostered!
