Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson proclaims "Iron Skillet Week" in Dallas
DALLAS—On Monday, September 15, Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson proclaimed “Iron Skillet Week” in the city ahead of Saturday’s football game between Southern Methodist University (SMU) and Texas Christian University (TCU).
The last game of the century-long SMU-TCU rivalry will take place September 20 at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth at 11:00 a.m. CT.
“It’s my privilege to proclaim the last official ‘Iron Skillet Week’ in Dallas,” said Mayor Johnson. “I know the people of Dallas will rally around our Mustangs all week long ahead of the final game of this iconic rivalry. I’m excited to see the Mustangs bring home the victory this weekend and keep the Iron Skillet here in Dallas for good.”
The full text of the proclamation can be read below:
WHEREAS, The Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs and the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs traditionally face off in an annual college football game; The winner takes home the Iron Skillet; and
WHEREAS, The SMU and TCU college football teams have faced off annually all but six times since 1915; The first official “Battle for the Iron Skillet” occurred on November 30, 1946; Although the origin of the Iron Skillet trophy is a mystery, the tradition has been kept alive for decades; and
WHEREAS, In 2019, the SMU Mustangs debuted their “Dallas” uniforms and defeated the TCU Horned Frogs to take the Iron Skillet back to Dallas; The Iron Skillet remained in Dallas through 2020 after the game’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic; The Mustangs defeated the Horned Frogs again in 2021 and rightfully held on to the Iron Skillet; The Horned Frogs took the Iron Skillet in 2022 and held it in 2023; and
WHEREAS, In last year’s match, the Mustangs defeated the Horned Frogs by a 66-42 score, bringing the Iron Skillet back to Dallas; and
WHEREAS, On Saturday, September 20, 2025, the final “Battle for the Iron Skillet” will be held at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth; The final game will be the 104th played between the two teams as part of their centurylong rivalry; and
WHEREAS, The City of Dallas, supporting the SMU Mustangs, is joining in the excitement of the week leading up to the big game; Residents of Dallas and fans of the Mustangs, extending well beyond the city’s geographic borders, will be cheering for SMU to keep the Iron Skillet in Dallas for good.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ERIC L. JOHNSON, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DALLAS, do hereby proclaim September 14-20, 2025, as
IRON SKILLET WEEK
in Dallas, Texas, and encourage all Dallasites to join in cheering on the SMU Mustangs in hopes of pulling off a victory against TCU on Saturday and keeping the Iron Skillet forever in Dallas.
