DALLAS - As fireworks light up the sky this Independence Day, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) invites the public to join a heartwarming opportunity: Calming the Canines, a volunteer event designed to provide comfort and companionship to shelter dogs during one of the most stressful nights of the year.
On Friday, July 4, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Dallas Animal Services (1818 N. Westmoreland Road), volunteers will sit with adoptable dogs inside the shelter, but outside the kennels, during peak fireworks hours. Participants are encouraged to bring a comfortable seat, such as a yoga mat, blanket, or folding chair. They can read, sing softly, talk quietly, or simply sit quietly with the animals to help ease the anxiety caused by loud fireworks.
“Fireworks may be fun for us, but they’re terrifying for many of our pets,” said Victoria Chittam Bennett, Assistant Director at DAS. “This event helps reduce stress for the dogs and creates a special opportunity for the community to connect with our animals.”
All ages are welcome, and a brief safety orientation will be held at the start of the event. Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. DAS will provide treats to pass out to the animals, but donations are also welcome.
