When you have inquiries that come in about your Foster Pet, it is important to remember that DAS, and our Foster Parent(s) by extension, follow a model based on “Open Adoptions.” For DAS, this means removing barriers to adoption and creating a welcoming and non-judgmental experience for the members of our community looking to adopt. It starts by celebrating people’s willingness to adopt and meeting them where they are in terms of their attitudes and understanding of pet care and investing in their success. In short, this adoption model is based on the knowledge that most pet relationships can be successful, and our goal is to provide counseling and support to make it so.
For additional research on Open Adoptions and to view the "Adopter's Welcome" guide curated by Humane World, please use the link here.
If you would like more information or have questions about Open Adoptions, please email DASFoster@dallas.gov or give the foster team a call at 214-671-1928.

If you are fostering or plan to foster kittens (or puppies) with ringworm, there is no longer any need to bring them to the shelter twice a week for lime dips.
We now have all the supplies you will need to treat ringworm in your own home including spray bottles, lime dip, and full instructions on how to mix and apply the lime dip to your foster pets.
We also have twice weekly volunteer shifts on Wednesdays & Saturdays at 12 noon for volunteers to help treat Ringworm puppies & kittens onsite. If you would like to attend one of these shifts to get some hands on experience, please email DASVolunteer@dallas.gov and we can connect you with an experienced volunteer!
Ticket to Ride is our out-of-state transport program, connecting dogs, and now cats, from DAS with rescue partners in other states! These rescues tag pets for transfer, opening up valuable kennel space and giving them a second chance.
To support this effort, we need short-term fosters to care for pets before their journey! Once a pet is tagged for rescue, they are no longer available for local adoption.
What to Expect as a Ticket to Ride Foster:
- The commitment is typically 2-3 weeks, though delays can occasionally extend this timeframe.
- Pets traveling out of state must have a health certificate issued within 10 days of transport. We’ll schedule an exam at DAS and provide all necessary details.
-
Transport Day: Drop-off times vary. For flight transports, drop-off is the evening before departure. Ground transport times depend on the specific route.
How to Get Involved:
By fostering, you’re not just giving a pet a temporary home—you’re helping them get ready for their future life!

Mark your calendars to join us for a foster meetup on June 22 from 5pm - 6pm-ish at Community Brewing Co. (3310 Commonwealth Dr, 75247).
We want to give everyone an opportunity to meet in person, share stories or tips, and enjoy some time together!
We will bring along foster supplies including food, gentle leaders, and enrichment items like toys. If there are any specific enrichment items you would like us to bring, please email DASFoster@dallas.gov, and we will work to bring those too!
Because we do not know how many people plan to attend or how much space we'll have available, we are asking that you do not bring your foster pets with you.
If you plan to attend, please sign up at https://DAS.as.me/fostermeetup
Next Friday, June 20th, DAS will be holding a foster vaccine / booster clinic for kittens and puppies from 6-8 PM in the conference room. If you have a foster kitten that has not yet had vaccines, or your kittens have been in foster for 2+ weeks (from the date of the clinic) and are available please sign up using the link here! Ideally, kittens and puppies should be receiving boosters every 2 weeks.
If you are not available for this date, or the spots are fully booked, you can use the link here to access our regular vaccine & booster sign up link!
Check out our Foster Events page to stay up-to-date on upcoming events. Email dasfoster@dallas.gov for eligibility. Any dogs that attend events can't be sick, have two DA2PP vaccines, spayed/neutered, not reactive on leash, and comfortable when crated.

Crates for Medium & Large Dogs
We are always in need of crates for medium to large dogs. Crates are very helpful for pets that need cage rest and to help acclimate a dog to a new home. If you have a crate that you are not in need of, you can donate directly to DAS or even purchase one via our Amazon wishlist.

Remember that our Foster Shed is chock full of all sorts of supplies to help you during your foster journey. Cleaning supplies, food, bowls, and more are ready for you when you need them. Just stop by the foster office to grab the key!
Also, we have had a lot of food donated by Hollywood Feed and its customers. Some of it is in the foster office and some in the foster shed but we have a lot more stored away. Just let the foster team know when you need food, and we'll help you out!
We are now utilizing a text-based platform for all foster medical concerns. Review the graphic below for details. We are no longer utilizing Anipanion for foster medical concerns.
The foster medical phone number is 866-603-3692, and you will need to text "Foster" to the phone number to opt in for messages. When texting our vets, please be sure to include your foster pet's name, A#, a description of symptoms, and photos (if applicable). This texting line will be monitored by a DAS veterinarian every day of the week from 9am to 3pm.
